What is Balanced Training?
Balanced dog training is a practical, results-driven approach that combines positive reinforcement with fair, humane corrections to teach dogs appropriate behavior. At Emily’s K9 Training, we focus on using positive training methods about 90% of the time—rewarding good behavior with praise, food, toys, and affection. The remaining 10% involves clear and appropriate corrections to help set boundaries and stop unwanted behaviors. This balanced approach helps dogs understand what’s expected of them, builds trust between dog and owner, and leads to long-lasting results. Every dog is different, and our goal is to create a communication system that is both kind and effective.
As part of your training we will show you how to properly and effectively use this method in a manner that is communicated clearly and fair for your dog. Knowledge is the first step in this process and will help guide you along this path.
Training Tools
At Emily’s K9 Training, we use a variety of tools to help clearly communicate with your dog in a way that’s fair, effective, and tailored to their needs. Some of the tools we incorporate include:
Leash Pressure & Slip Leads – To teach direction and guidance in a gentle way.
Clickers & Food Rewards – To mark and reward desired behaviors.
Prong Collars – Used properly, these help provide consistent, even pressure for better leash communication.
E-Collars – Low-level stimulation is used to reinforce known commands and create reliable off-leash obedience.
Crates – For structure, potty training, and helping dogs learn to relax.
We take time to ensure owners are educated on how each tool works and why it’s being used. Tools are never used to punish—but rather to guide, interrupt, or add clarity to the training process.
Common Misconceptions About Balanced Training
Balanced training is often misunderstood, so we’d like to clear up a few myths:
Myth: Balanced training is harsh or outdated.
Truth: Modern balanced training emphasizes positive reinforcement first and uses fair corrections as needed—not punishment.Myth: Tools like prong collars or e-collars are abusive.
Truth: When used correctly, these tools are safe, humane, and incredibly effective. Most dogs respond well to clear communication and feel more confident with structure.Myth: You only need positive reinforcement.
Truth: While positive reinforcement is essential (and our primary method), most dogs also benefit from boundaries and guidance when learning what not to do. Balanced training provides both.
Balanced training is about meeting your dog where they are and using the most ethical and effective methods to help them succeed.
